![]() Q: Citing the Berrellesa Palms senior apartments and Cascara Canyon apartments among other recent decision, critics say the current council is too pro-development and doesn’t do enough to support existing neighborhoods. Moreover, I support the budding ideas for regional centers revolving around science and sports. ![]() Martinez is lucky in that we have spaces in our old downtown that would be conducive to this kind of development, especially around our train station. Planners encourage infill development that provides increased housing opportunities that replenish and increase populations in the old downtowns, often referring to the new residents as a “critical mass” needed to support, at a minimal level, boutiques, specialty shops, restaurants and the like. Menesini: Old downtowns (and successful ones dot the Bay Area) must become destinations.As a unique destination, we can draw visitors from throughout the county and state. We need to capitalize on our history and location by emphasizing the positives, such as the marina and our diverse heritage. McLaughlin: Owners of properties that are vacant need to continue interior and exterior maintenance so that customers of neighboring businesses will feel safe and welcomed.We need an aggressive marketing plan that will emphasize the uniqueness of our downtown and its merchants. Owners of the empty storefronts need to make their properties more appealing in order to bring new businesses to Martinez. Gerlack: Implementing a beautification program for the downtown will greatly enhance its ability to attract new businesses.Finally, there are significant project opportunities along the Highway 4 corridor that are in the works. In addition, moving forward on the redevelopment of the marina, the relocation of the city’s corporation yard out of downtown, and the utilization of the 630 and 610 Court Street properties will also be key. ![]() Seeing the development of an indoor sports complex at Waterfront Park and the opening of a micro-brewing facility would also be catalyst projects in the downtown. I also believe that the initiation of a redevelopment program would help stimulate the economy. DeLaney: I recently initiated and succeeded in passing an economic stimulus program for Martinez that would reduce impact fees on projects citywide for two years. ![]() I believe the city needs docent volunteers, made up of people who are familiar with the area and help cut through the red tape. We are lacking a package plan where the city can work hand in hand to make it much easier for startups to occur. Alstad: Martinez is in need of adding a business advisory program that works with potential business owners to lure them into town. ![]()
